The 1,125 sq.m. two storey addition to the existing 4,300 sq.m. Dood Cristall Family YMCA aquatics & fitness center, includes extensions to fitness, childcare and administrative programming of the facility. The additional fitness spaces increase the weight and cardio vascular training area, a new 260 sq.m. aerobics studio, as well as a renovated 120 sq.m. multipurpose fitness studio, rooftop outdoor childcare activity center, along with a 700 sq.m. addition to the Childcare centre on the main floor doubling its capacity.

The addition ties into the existing facility along the central spine and responds to the urban context. The design supports transparency of activity, allowing interesting views of spatial relations between program elements, while maintaining the existing security and privacy divisions.

The new addition follows sustainable practices of the original LEED Silver facility with new emphasis on daylighting, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. The new facility has expansive glazing which floods the fitness areas with natural light and provides views of the downtown.
